SAFETY DAY
Good Practice in the
Quarrying Industry
The South Wales Branch
held a Safety Day on 24th April 2007.
Following the welcome
from the Branch Chairman, Glyn Cullen, the keynote address was given by
Phil Redmond, Director of Civil and Marine Cement.
Mr Redmond used his
personal experience of the aftermath of a fatal motorway accident to
illustrate that planning and good practices are essential to ensure a safe
working environment.
The morning session was a
series of introductions to the workshops which had been arranged for the
afternoon at Hanson’s Lithalun Quarry.
The workshops covered
Confined Spaces, Slinging and Lifting, Manual Handling, High Voltage
Maintenance, Isolation and Lock-off, and Defect Inspection. Each of these
workshops included practical demonstrations with delegate participation.
The closing address was
given by Institute Vice-Chairman David Sharman, who congratulated the
Branch on the programme and organisation of the day.
Glyn Cullen thanked
Hanson for their assistance and all the speakers for their contributions
and provision of equipment.
