Continuous
Professional Development
An update
and a Quarry Manager's View
The Branch technical programme
for the year began on the 14th September at the Heronston
Hotel, near Bridgend.
30 members were presented a
paper by branch committee member Stan Curtain of Aggregate Industries
entitled, ‘Continuous Professional Development – An update and a Quarry
Manager's View’. This presentation was also given to the West Midlands
Branch earlier in the year.
The paper provided the back
ground of the Institute of Quarrying's CPD scheme and highlighted how it
had grown across the UK since it was launched in January 2003.
Stan presented a table, which
showed the individual branches
in the UK
and their membership, against the number of members who had actually
signed up for CPD.
In South Wales there is a
membership of 180, with only 58 signed up for CPD. This is a disappointing
figure, but provides an ideal opportunity for the branch to implement a
programme to increase participation.
With the increased pressure
from the HSE, as evidence to prove competency, there is a valid and legal
justification for the maintenance of an individuals CPD file.
The importance of the scheme
and the various activities in which CPD can be gained were outlined, so
that the members can fill in the register of activities correctly, without
duplicating or incorrectly identifying activities.
It was also noted that it only
take a few minutes to complete the register once that it is up and
running, so not having enough time to complete it is not a valid excuse
for not maintaining your file!
